How to Fix and Unbrick Your Wii Black Screen at Startup

If your Wii is experiencing a screen malfunction, you can take several steps to troubleshoot the issue. Loose cables are a common cause of a black screen. In addition, some software glitches can cause the system to shut down. If none of your troubleshooting attempts resolve the problem, the console could be damaged and might need to be repaired.

Instructions

    • 1

Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds.

    • 2

Unplug all of the cables connected to the Wii console.

    • 3

Unplug the power cable from the wall outlet or power source. Wait at least five minutes before continuing.

    • 4

Plug the cables back into your Wii, then reconnect the power adapter to the power source. Make sure each cable is connected to the correct port and that all connections are secure.

    • 5

Inspect the other end of the TV cable. Verify that it is securely inserted into the correct port on the back or side of your TV. The ports should be marked "IN" or "Input" and they should correspond in color. Some newer TVs don't have the traditional yellow video input; instead, the video input port is green and marked with a "Y." Audio ports are always white and red.

    • 6

Verify that your Wii has proper ventilation. Clear the vent for accumulated dust and clean if necessary. Overheating can prevent the Wii from powering up or working properly.

    • 7

Unplug all accessories, such as non-Wii remotes, and remove any new internal parts that aren't specifically made for the Wii, such as a third-party memory card.

    • 8

Make sure your TV is set to the proper input. Press the "Input" or "TV/Video" button on the side or bottom of the TV and click repeatedly or use the arrow buttons to find the input that displays the Wii screen.
