How to Know If Your Wii Is Broken

The Nintendo Wii game console has many interesting features, including wireless connectivity, an online store with a robust library of emulation titles and motion sensing controls. Nintendo's quality products are built to last, but even the best hardware can wear down over time. Problems like black screens and random shut downs are troublesome, but do not always indicate a serious problem with the machine itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Reset the console's power adapter. The large gray power brick that connects the console to the power outlet can sometimes cause random system shut downs. Unplug the power brick from the console and outlet and leave it sitting for two to three minutes to reset it.

    • 2

Check that the power cables are properly attached and press the "Power" button on the console if the power indicator does not light up. The power indicator has a small LED that displays the console's status: red while off, yellow while in standby and blue while in use. This LED can sometimes die, but does not have an effect on the console's operation if it does.

    • 3

Check that the AV cables are properly placed behind the Wii and TV. A blank, fuzzy or discolored screen and audio that is muted, buzzing or distorted can be caused by improperly plugged AV cables. Take a can of compressed air, which can be purchased at any office supply store, and blow into the ports for the cable to remove any dust. Replace the cable if the problem persists.

    • 4

Check the batteries of your Wiimote controller if the screen goes black while surfing the Wii Channels. Wii Channels, such as the Wii Store, sometimes freeze up during loading if connection is lost to the wireless controller. Reset the console and press the "Resync" button inside the controller's battery compartment to reconnect the controller. Try using another controller if the problem persists.

    • 5

Turn the console off and let it sit for a few hours if the power continually shuts off during extended play sessions. The internal components of the Wii can sometimes overheat during prolonged use. Take frequent breaks and let your system cool off periodically to avoid overheating, which can damage your console in the long run.

Contact Nintendo's technical support if none of the above steps resolve your issues. You likely have some sort of hardware failure and require repair services.
