The Wii uses one of three operating systems, depending on which part of the world you live in. NTSC is used in Japan and the United States -- in two different formats -- but the rest of the world uses PAL. If you accidentally update your Wii firmware with the wrong country code, it will "semi-brick" the Wii, or lock you out from any further updates. It can also happen by installing a game from the wrong region.

Buy a first-party Wii game from the correct region. This is a game that is released by Nintendo for the Wii, rather than an outside, or third-party developer. First-party games usually come with up-to-date firmware that installs on your Wii.
