How to Resync Wiimotes

A Wii console sometimes can't recognize Wiimotes, particularly controllers that did not come in the box with the console or those not manufactured by Nintendo. Even Wiimotes that once worked may no longer be recognized. In both cases, the controllers need to be re-synced. This can be done quickly so you can get back to playing.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the Wii by pressing the power button at the front of the console. The light will turn orange when it's off. Unplug the power cord from the outlet and leave unplugged for a few seconds.

    • 2

Plug the cord back into the outlet and turn the console on by pressing the power button again. The light will turn green.

    • 3

Open the small flap on the front of the console next to the reset button while the Wii is going through its introductory screens. Press the red sync button for 15 seconds. This will clear all of the syncs with Wiimotes and different devices.

    • 4

Remove the battery cover on the first Wiimote that you'd like to re-sync. Press and release the small circular button labeled "sync" below the batteries. The four blue lights on the front of the controller will blink.

    • 5

Quickly press and release the sync button underneath the flap on the front of the console. The blue lights on the front of the controller will stop blinking and one of the lights will stay on.

    • 6

Repeat steps four and five to re-synch other Wiimotes.
