Motion Controls
The biggest attraction many people have to the Wii and its remote are the motion controls featured in many games. Hit the perfect shot in "Tiger Woods PGA Golf," roll a strike while bowling in "Wii Sports" or carefully remove blocks without toppling the tower in "Boom Blox." Most of these types of games allow four players to compete if you have enough remotes.
Old-School Games
Some Wii games and many of the titles available on the Virtual Console allow you to turn the Wii remote sideways and use it in a similar fashion to the NES remote, with the "1" and "2" buttons replacing the "A" and "B" buttons of the earlier console's controller. Some of the top games that use this type of control are "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" and "Donkey Kong Country Returns." Nearly all of the NES and TurboGrafx games available on Virtual Console also use the Wii remote in this fashion.
Wii Applications
Point the Wii remote at the screen and use the cursor to access the menus. You will also use the remote to browse the Internet if you download the Internet Channel onto your Wii. Grab Web pages to scroll down them or click the URL box to type in a website address. In the Weather Channel you can grab the globe and spin it with a flick of the wrist. Move channels to different places in your Wii Menu by holding down the "A" and "B" buttons and then dropping it into another location while releasing those buttons.
Mii Creation
You can use the Wii remote to create avatars called Miis that pop up in certain games on your system. Access the Mii Plaza from the Wii menu and choose the option to create a Mii. With the Wii remote, you can scroll through the menus to form your character, selecting all of the facial features, gender, body type and skin tone. Once you create a Mii, you can view it in the Mii Plaza. Choose the parade option and all of your Miis will march together to music.
