Wiimote Will Not Sync

Nintendo's Wii uses radio waves instead of wires to send information to and from its controller, called Wiimotes. There are a few common problems that could cause a Wiimote to fail while attempt to "sync" or establish a connection with the Wii console. If the Wiimote cannot connect, the "Player #" lights will flash for a few seconds before turning off. Fortunately, solving these problems should not be difficult.
  1. Signal Interferance

    • Make sure that the Wii can receive a good signal from the Wiimote. Because the signal is an invisible beam of light, objects in the way of the sensor bar can block it. Make sure that there is nothing between controller and sensor and that the sensor bar is centered above or below the screen and that the controller is between three and 10 feet from the sensor. Turn off wireless devices that may interfere with the Wii signal, such as cordless phones and wireless computer equipment; remove or put out sources of heat such as candles and fireplaces, which can disrupt the signal. Additionally, to strengthen the Wiimote's signal, put new batteries into it.

    Reset the Console

    • Turn the Wii console off by holding the power button for one second. Unplug the console's power cord then reinsert it after a couple seconds. Restart the console by pressing the power button and not by pressing power on one of your Wiimotes.

    Clear Sync Data

    • Open the horizontal door on the front of the Wii when the black and white health warning screen appears. Hold down the small red button labeled "Sync" for 15 seconds. This clears the sync data saved from previous Wiimote connections.

    Resync Wiimotes

    • Remove the battery cover of one of the Wiimotes you intend to use. Briefly press the small red button adjacent to the batteries then the one on the front of the Wii. Wait for the "Player #" lights at the bottom of the controller to stop flashing and add a solid light by one of the numbers. Repeat this step with each additional Wiimote you need to sync.
