How to Softmod a Wii 4.2U

One sure way to maximize the gaming power of your Nintendo Wii is to softmod it. Through this process you can run the homebrew channel on your Wii system, which will allow you to play all of the homebrew games and enjoy the homebrew applications that independent programmers have developed for the Wii. Using homebrew applications through a softmod also allows you more flexibility than a traditional hardmod since a softmod can be easily installed or uninstalled at any time.

Things You'll Need

  • SD card, 2GB or less
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl game disc
  • Smash Stack exploit
  • HackMii application

Instructions

  1. SD Card Preparation

    • 1

Make sure that your Wii is from North American or Japan, since the Smash Stack softmod method will only work for these consoles. If you need to use a different method, the steps you will follow will be similar.

    • 2

Insert an SD card into your computer. If your computer does not have an SD slot, you can either buy an external SD card reader or use a device that uses SD cards that can be attached to your computer via a USB cable (like a digital camera).

    • 3

Go to "My Computer" or "Computer" and then right click on the SD Drive. Choose "Format" from the drop-down menu. When the formatting window appears, choose the "FAT32" (or just "FAT") partition option and then click on "Format."

    • 4

Pressing the power button on the Wii.

    • 5

Insert the now formatted SD Card into the Wii's SD card slot.

    • 6

Insert the Super Smash Bros. Brawl game disc into your Wii and start the game. Then go to the "Custom Stage Builder" screen and move all of the custom stages (including the three samples that come with the game) to your SD card.

    • 7

Turn off the Wii and insert your SD card into your computer.

    • 8

Rename the folder that contains your Super Smash Bros. Brawl saved custom stage data from "private" to "privateold" so that this information can be restored later.

    • 9

Download the newest versions of the Smash Stack exploit and HackMii Installer application to your desktop.

    • 10

Unzip both the Smash Stack and HackMii Installer to your desktop.

    • 11

Copy the folder "private" from the unzipped Smash Stack folder to the root folder of your SD card. Then copy the file "boot.elf" from the unzipped HackMii Installer folder to the root folder of your SD card.

    Running the HackMii Installer

    • 12

Turn your Nintendo Wii on and insert the Super Smash Bros. Brawl game disc into the system. Also insert the SD card into the Wii.

    • 13

Start Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Then go to the custom stage builder screen.

    • 14

Let the HackMii Installer boot screen appear (it does so automatically). Once it appears it may stay on the screen with no change for a minute or more. This is entirely normal and is just the result of the HackMii Installer loading..

    • 15

Press "1" on your Wiimote to advance into the HackMii Installer menu when the prompt appears at the bottom of the screen.

    • 16

Read the results of the test to see if your system can support the Homebrew Channel and the installation of BootMii (a Wii back-up application). Press the "A" button on the Wiimote to continue into the "Main Menu."

Making a Copy of Your Wii's System and Installing the Homebrew Channel

    • 17

Press "Up" on the Wiimote D-pad to move to the "BootMii..." option. Press "Up" to move to the "Prepare a SD card" option. Press the "A" button on the Wiimote.

    • 18

Press "Up" on the Wiimote to move to the "Yes, continue" option. Press the "A" button on the Wiimote. This will save a copy of your Wii's system to the SD card that is currently in the Wii console. Press "A" on the Wiimote to "Continue."

    • 19

Press "Down" on the Wiimote D-pad and then press the "A" button to choose the "Return to the main menu option."

    • 20

Press "Up" on the Wiimote D-pad twice and then press the "A" button to choose the "Install the Homebrew Channel" option. Press the "A" button once more to choose "Yes, continue." The Homebrew Channel will then install itself on your Wii.
