Instructions to Softmod Wii 4.2U

The Nintendo Wii was first released in November 2006 as a seventh generation console in competition with the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft XBOX360. While Sony and Microsoft focus on graphics, Nintendo's focus is on family friendly and interactive gameplay. You can softmod your Nintendo Wii to increase its capabilities to play backed up games on DVD, USB or SD drives or use applications through HomeBrew to watch DVDs. You can also play out-of-region games when you softmod your Wii.

    • 4

Insert the SD card in the slot and turn your Wii on. Select the Wii channel menu, then choose your SD card.

    • 5

Click "boot.dol," then select "Wad Manager" and press "A" to launch it.

    • 6

Press "1," then select "A" to install all WADs. Press any button to continue the process.

    • 7

Press "2" to launch the app manager. Choose "hackmii_installer_v0.8," then select "A" to launch it.

    Install HomeBrew and BootMii

    • 8

Read the warning that appears informing you that you should not pay for any software used to hack your Wii since it is all provided free for public use. Press "1" to continue.

    • 9

Select "Install" for both HomeBrew and BootMii. If possible, select to install BootMii to Boot2 instead of as an IOS. Newer Wiis may not allow you to place it in Boot2. It is preferable to install to Boot2, since you have a greater chance of unbricking your Wii if something goes wrong.

    • 10

Select "Prepare" to prepare your SD card.

    Make a NAND backup

    • 11

Restart your Wii, then launch HomeBrew. Press "Home" on your Wiimote, then launch "Bootmii."

    • 12

Walk up to your Wii and press "power" three times then "reset" twice to start the NAND backup. This creates a copy of your Wii's system information for backup purposes.

    • 13

Copy the following files off your SD card to a folder on your computer. Save them in case you need to restore your NAND in the future.

      sd:\bootmii

      sd:\nand.bin

      sd:\key.bin

    Hack the Wii

    • 14

Format your SD card again by clicking "Computer," then right-clicking the SD card and choosing "Format."

    • 15

Download and extract the archives for the NTSC-U ModPack, CIOS Pack v3, IOS Update and the Shopping Channel to your SD card.

    • 16

Insert your SD card back in your Wii, then launch the HomeBrew channel. Press "Home" on your Wiimote, then select "BootMii." Press "A" to select WadManager.

    • 17

Press "1" to select all WADS. Press "A" to begin the installation, then wait for the installation to complete. Press any button to continue.

    • 18

Select the folder "System Menu 4.1" then press "A." Press "1" to install all three WADs. Press any button to continue when the WADs install. Press "B" to go to the previous menu, then select "IOS-Update." Press "1" to install all 25 WADs, then press any button to continue after they install.

    Install Priiloader

    • 19

Install Priiloader to protect your Wii from bricking. Launch the "HomeBrew" channel, then select "Priiloader" from the menu. Read the warning, then press "+" or "A" to install.

    • 20

Go to your Wii and hold down "Reset" to launch Priiloader. Choose "System Menu Hacks."

    • 21

Select any hacks you want to install. They are self explanatory but definitely select "Block Disk Updates" and "Block Online Updates" since these are the updates that will brick your Wii. Press "A" to save your settings, then press "B" to go back to the previous menu.

    • 22

Select "Load/Install" file, then choose "USBLoaderCFG.dol."

    • 23

Format your SD card one more time, then extract the contents of the "AppPack" download to the card. Install these apps from the HomeBrew channel. The pack includes a backup disk channel, a savegame manager and a USB game loader. You can also find other applications freely on the web.
