Characters
Unlocking characters in "Mario Kart Wii" requires besting the game in a variety of modes. Some characters are unlocked after beating certain cups. For example, Daisy is unlocked by beating the 50cc Special Cup, Diddy Kong by completing the 50cc Lightning Cup and Dry Bones with the 100cc Leaf Cup. However, other characters are unlocked in the time trial mode. Unlock Funky Kong by beating four expert staff ghost data, and unlock Toadette by playing all 50 courses.
Cups and Classes
There are four separate cups to unlock, as well as one hidden class. To open the Leaf Cup, place in the top three on both the Shell Cup and Banana cup. For the Lightning Cup you must earn a trophy on the Leaf Cup. The Star Cup also requires you to place in the top three in two different races: the Mushroom Cup and the flower cup. Unlock the final set of races, the Special Cup, by earning a trophy on the Star Cup. For the hidden Mirror Class which flips all of the courses, you must win all of the 150cc cups.
Victory Photos
There are dozens of victory photos to unlock, and two separate types. The first photo is unlocked by winning a trophy in every cup for each available class. This will unlock a photo of your Mii posing with Mario and Peach. For the other series of victory photos, which feature your Mii with every other character in the game, you must get first place in every single Grand Prix cup.
Karts and Bikes
There are three different classes of Karts and Bikes to unlock: large, medium and small. These are all unlocked through winning specific cups or time trials. For example, unlock the Dragonetti large kart by winning the 150cc Lightning Cup, or the medium Turbo Blooper kart by placing first in the 150cc Leaf Cup. To unlock the large Torpedo bike, beat 12 expert staff ghost times in Time Trial mode. For the small bike Magikruiser, simply complete a Time Trial race on eight courses.
