Wii Remote Not Working in Games Troubleshooting

The Nintendo Wii's primary controller is the Wii Remote, a motion based controller that allows you to physically simulate the actions happening on screen in select games (such as Wii Sports). The wireless controller that must sync to the Wii before play. The Wii Remote works in conjunction with the Sensor Bar, which is used to detect the Wii Remote's actions. If either device is not connected or powered properly, performance issues occur.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that the Sensor Bar is connected to the Wii and facing you. You need to be within range from three to 10 feet to the sensor and have an unobstructed view for the Wii to properly detect your movements and inputs. Nearby candles, microwaves and other infrared devices also cause interference.

Replace the old batteries with a fresh set of the same brand. Low batteries cause inconsistent signal drops while playing games, lower controller speaker volume and disabling of the vibration function.

    • 3

Reset and re-sync the Wii Remote, which remedies the problem if the cursor is off-center, jerky or disappearing. To reset and re-sync the Wii Remote, take the batteries out of the remote and wait for one minute to reinsert them. Do not put the battery cover back on. With the Wii turned on, open the "SD Card Slot" on the front of the Wii and press the "Sync" button. Press the "Sync" button below the batteries in the Wii Remote. The lights on the controller will flash temporarily. When they stabilize, the sync is complete. You can reattach the battery compartment and test out the remote in the Wii Channel Menu and various games.

Attach the Wii Remote expansion accessory (such as the Nunchuck or Wii Motion Plus) that is required by some games to the expansion slot on the bottom of the Wii Remote. The Wii includes one Nunchuck (up to four are supported) which can be connected to the Wii Remote. "Wii Boxing," "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" and "Rayman Raving Rabbits" are just a few Wii games that require the Nuchuck. Any game that requires an expansion accessory clearly says so on the packing and in the documentation.

Clean the buttons on the Wii Remote regularly to remedy and prevent sticking. Put a small amount of water (too much can result in permanent damage) on a clean toothbrush and gently brush the toothbrush around the sides of the buttons. Continue to do so until the buttons can be pressed and released without any friction. Use a dry paper towel to dry the controller and let it sit for at least one hour before using it again.
