Wii Golf Hints

"Wii Sports" offers a nine-hole golf course among the various activities on the game disc. You use the Wii remote to swing the club, attempting to get the lowest possible score on each hole while considering variables such as wind speed and slope of the terrain. By mastering the control scheme and using golf strategy you should be shooting under par in no time.
  1. Preparation

    • Insert your wrist through the strap so that you do not accidentally toss the Wii remote during a swing. Hold this controller as you would a golf club, with your fingers on top of the Wii remote so you can press the buttons. Set up the game for either the "L" or "R" controls depending on which hand you swing with. Move the directional pad up and down to select your club. You only have the choice of four -- drive, iron, wedge and putter.

    Swinging

    • Move the directional pad right or left to aim your shot. If the wind is blowing strongly from left to right, aim left of the hole to compensate, and vice versa. Until you hold down the "A" button your golfer will not address the ball, practice your swing a few times first. When you are ready to hit your shot, hold the "A" button and take a light swing. If you swing too hard, you will hook (hit the ball to the left if you are right-handed or to the right if you are left-handed) or slice, which is the opposite of a hook.

    Putting

    • Just as in real golf, the greens often have a bit of slope you must consider. Press the "1" button on the Wii remote to get a closer look at the green in order to better read the putt. Use the "2" button to adjust the camera so you can view the putt from different angles. Hold "A" and take a light swing when you are ready to putt. When you fill the gauge the ball will travel about 60 feet, so if you have a 25-foot putt, try to fill the meter halfway.

    Power Gauge and Map

    • Perhaps the trickiest component to master in this game is using the power gauge and map to hit the perfect shot. Before you hit your shot, examine the course map on the lower right part of the screen. You will see a line depending on how you set up that shows approximately where your ball will travel when you fill the power gauge. You may need to take a lighter swing so that your ball lands short of the end of that line if a full shot will put your ball in a hazard.
