Game Tips for Mario Bros. for the Wii

Even if you have played the original "Super Mario Bros." game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, you're in for a whole new experience with "New Super Mario Bros." for the Wii. The game features many more secrets, levels and collectibles, and Mario's friends Luigi, Toad and Yoshi come along as well. A few tips and tricks will help you get the most out of your time with Mario.
  1. Collectible Coins

    • As you play the game, you'll notice large golden coins floating around in each level. Every level has three coins, and obtaining each of them requires a bit of skill. You can pick up these coins by either touching them or by throwing an item at them. You're able to purchase hint videos with the coins you collect. These hints are often very helpful and show you things like secret level exits, special moves and the location of more coins. Additionally, when you collect all 231 coins in the game, you unlock the secret World 9.

    Free Coins and Items

    • Mushroom Houses are placed on each world map in the game. Inside each Mushroom House, you're allowed to select a free item. After you pick the item, though, the Mushroom House disappears. Once you complete the game with a 100 percent rating, though, Mushroom Houses do not disappear after being used.

Coins are useful in this game since collecting 100 of them gives you a free life. For more money, flip the Wii remote up while standing in front of a dancing flower. This rewards you with a coin.

    Extra Mushroom Houses

    • You can make more Mushroom Houses appear on the map by rescuing Toad in certain levels. If you see Toad lost in a level, pick him up and bring him to the level's exit. Hit the goal when the timer is stopped at a specific time to get different-colored Mushroom Houses. For instance, if the last digit of the timer is 0 through 3, you get a green house. Nos. 4 through 6 reward you with a red house, and 7 through 9 result in a gold house. Each color of house rewards you with different types of items. If you are playing in multiplayer mode, exit the level when the last two digits on the timer are the same to get a free Mushroom House. Getting two zeroes, however, does not count.

    Secret Exits

    • While playing certain levels, be on the lookout for secret exits. You'll be able to recognize these by the red flags marking the goal. Secret exits give you various rewards, such as a warp cannon to a new world, or a shortcut that lets you skip a difficult level. Some secret exits take you to a hidden level that is usually more difficult than the game's normal levels. Hidden levels also often have a reward inside, making them worth the trouble.

    Moves and Powers

    • You can use Mario's Spin Jump by shaking the Wii remote. This lets you attack enemies and jump further. If you're standing on the ground when you shake the remote, you are able to lift objects. Mario can also jump off of the wall to reach high areas. Learn to master Mario's new power-ups, such as the Propeller Mushroom, which lets you jump very high, and then glide slowly to the ground. The Ice Flower lets you freeze enemies in blocks of ice, and the Penguin Suit turns you into a penguin that can slide on ice and swim quickly. The Mini Mushroom shrinks Mario, allowing him to fit through tiny gaps.
