Purpose
Once the Wii is connected to the Internet -- using the Opera browser -- you and your children can check for such things as email and browse videos. You must first download the Internet Channel from the Wii Shop Channel. However, this will also allow your children to communicate with strangers online and browse websites you may not wish them to browse. Setting parental controls on the Wii system will allow you to block -- or restrict -- Internet access. Just like a normal Internet connection, parents should always confirm who their child is talking to, what subjects are being discussed, and what videos are being viewed.
Parental Control
If you wish to restrict Internet access on the Nintendo Wii, you must utilize the Wii Parental Control settings. You will need to create a four-digit PIN -- or password -- to activate the Parental Control settings and supply an answer to a secret question in case you forget your PIN. To access the Wii Parental Control settings, turn the console on and enter the Wii Channel menu using the Wii Remote. Move the cursor to the lower-left corner of the screen and locate the "Wii" button. Press A on your Wii remote. Locate the Wii Settings option, which will have a picture of a wrench as an icon. Press the A button again. From here, locate the Parental Controls option. You can now disable the Internet browser.
The Download
You can earn Wii Points and use these points to download content from the Wii Shop Channel. If you want to restrict this option, you may. Once in the Wii Parental Control option screen, simply disable the use of Wii Points. You can also disable the option to send and receive messages during online play. You must have your PIN to disable these functions. If you have forgotten your PIN, you will be prompted to answer the secret question. Any disabled option can be activated again from the Parental Control screen.
Warning
Only one PIN can be installed per Nintendo Wii. If everyone within your household is not restricted from using the Internet browser or chatting online, make sure they have access to the PIN. Once restrictions have been applied, you must have the PIN to override them. When you first purchase the Nintendo Wii, the Parental Controls are automatically set to OFF, meaning no restrictions will apply if the device is connected to the Internet.
