How to Use the SD-Boot on a Wii

Designed and built by Nintendo, the Wii is a seventh generation video game console made popular by its use of wireless, motion-sensitive controllers. The Wii features an SD card slot to store saved games and other user-generated information. By unlocking the Wii through a soft-mod, which installs the "Homebrew Channel," third-party software can be booted directly from the SD card. This includes community-made games and applications, emulators and media players.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the "Wii Homebrew Launcher" (see Resources) and unzip the file to your computer. Copy the "boot.elf" file to the SD card.

    • 2

Create a folder on the root of the SD card called "Homebrew." Create additional folders inside "Homebrew" for each emulator or application you want to run from the SD card. For example, a "Gamecube" folder, or "Gameboy Advance."

    • 3

Download the emulators or software you want to run from the SD card. Copy its "boot.elf" or "boot.dol" file to its relevant folder inside the "Homebrew" folder on the SD card.

    • 4

Copy any additional files, such as legally created backup files, to the same directory as their emulator on the SD card.

    • 5

Insert the SD card into the Wii and switch it on. Launch the "Homebrew Channel" and select the emulator you want to run. The applications available on the SD card will automatically be displayed.
