Practice Mode
Make extensive use of the practice mode before attempting a recipe against the clock. Each recipe has a brief tutorial, which isn't always particularly clear. The practice mode allows you to perform each step of a recipe in any order, and as many times as you like. By familiarizing yourself with the specific actions of each step in the recipe, you stand a better chance of achieving high scores during the cook off, or against friends.
Chopping
Chopping ingredients is one of the most used actions in the game. It is performed by tracing an on-screen arrow using the Wii controller. The game automatically turns ingredients around, such as onions and peppers, so there's no need to move the knife left or right after making the first chop; doing so only wastes time. Wait for the ingredient to be put in position under the knife, then match the chopping motions seen on the screen as quickly and accurately as possible.
Stirring
Stirring is another popular requirement in the majority of recipes. The game's instructions indicate that the Wii controller should be pointed downwards while performing the stirring action, but this isn't actually required. Instead, it can help to point the Wii controller directly at the screen while making the circular movements. The pointer will remain visible, providing a visual cue for making the motions smoother and more circular. This is interpreted by the game as more efficient stirring, and improves your cooking time.
Cooking
The game features several different types of cooking, such as deep frying and stir frying. The only way you can tell when the ingredients are cooked to perfection is by watching for visual cues. These include smoke beginning to rise from the pan, or the ingredients changing color. As soon as you see the changes take place, grab the food out of the pan and place it quickly on the plate. Holding hot food for too long will cause you to drop it, which will ruin the recipe.
