How to Upgrade Wii Memory

Unlike other consoles of the same generation, the Nintendo Wii doesn't allow you to connect a large hard drive to store downloads and game saves. Instead, the system comes with 512MB of internal memory and the ability to expand the memory to up to 32GB using SD and high-capacity SDHC cards. You can also use the SD card as a portable memory card, if you want to play your saved games on another system.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off the Wii and open the card slot cover on the front of the console.

    • 2

Insert the SD into the slot with the label facing the disc slot. Close the card slot cover.

    • 3

Power on the Wii and select the "Wii Settings" icon. Select "Data Management" and choose "Wii Channels" or "Save Data."

    • 4

Select "Copy" and choose "Yes" when prompted for confirmation. The data type you selected -- either Wii Channels or game-save data -- will be copied to the SD card, where it will remain accessible while freeing up the Wii's internal memory. Going forward, you can download content directly to the SD card from the Wii Shop channel.
