How to Play AVI and DivX Files Using Wii Homebrew

The Nintendo Wii can run homebrew software when softmodded or hardmodded with the Homebrew Channel. The Homebrew Channel allows the Wii to run homebrew media player software that plays AVI and DivX file extensions. You must install the Homebrew Channel on the Wii before you can play AVI and DivX files.

Instructions

      Navigate to the Wii Brew website and click on the "Applications" link under the "homebrew" section.

      Click on "Media Players" and browse through the "Video and Audio" section of "Media Players." GeeXbox, MPlayer CE and WiiMC are all media players that play .avi and DivX file extensions among many other file formats.

      Click on the "Download" link to download the specific media player.

      Extract the media player from the archive it is downloaded in and copy it to a directory on your computer.

      Insert an SD card into your computer and format the SD card as FAT32. This allows the Wii console to read the file structure on your SD card. Format the SD card by going to "My Computer" and right-click on the SD card. Select "Format" from the drop down menu. Click in the box "FAT32" to select the SD card to be formatted as FAT32. Click on the "Quick Format" box and click "Start" to format the SD card.

      Place the .avi or DivX video files on your SD card or USB drive. Make a folder named "Videos" or "Movies" on the root of the SD card or USB drive. Copy the video files to the directory. Make a folder on the root of the SD card and name it "Apps." Copy the media player folder to the "Apps" folder. Place any other corresponding directories on the root of the SD card. See the specific instructions with the media player.

      Put the SD card into the Wii and turn the console on.

      Launch the Homebrew Channel by pressing "A" on the channel to start it.

      Browse through the Homebrew Channel until you find the media player you would like to use. Press "A" on the application to load it.

      Browse the SD card or USB drive for your movie file and press "A" on it to play it. Detailed user instructions can be found with the specific media player you download.
