Mortimer Beckett Puzzle Hints

In the "Mortimer Beckett" series, you play as the titular character Mortimer whose puzzle-solving skills bring him to strange new areas. "Mortimer Beckett and the Spooky Manor," the first game in the series, quickly establishes the puzzle mechanic in the game, and gives you some tips for playing puzzles later in the series.
  1. Hotspots

    • There are certain areas which will interact with objects you may have in your inventory, and with other elements in the game. These are referred to as "hotspots." You can find these hotspots by moving the mouse or Wii cursor over the area. Hotspot areas are marked in a red outline when your mouse hovers over them. When you find a hotspot, try putting the various items in your inventory into that area. You may not have the required item yet, however.

    Ghosts

    • Clicking wildly is a bad idea, because after a random number of clicks a ghost may appear on the screen. Ghosts don't do anything except obscure your vision. However, they are kind of annoying, and more random clicking will make more specters appear. They will disappear after a short time, but in the meantime they will stand in your way for a few minutes at a time. If you really can't work around a ghost, move to another room for a few minutes and return when you think they have disappeared.

    Inventory

    • You have an inventory at the bottom of your screen which automatically stores certain objects. Objects seem to fall into two categories: those which belong to the house, and those which solve puzzles. House items need to be restored to their rightful place in order to proceed through the game, whereas puzzle items can be combined to solve new puzzles. These items are scattered around the mansion, and finding something in one room doesn't mean that is the room in which it will be used.

    Hint Book

    • If you are stuck, you do have a hint book to help you out of certain jams. Each time you begin a new level, you have between 10 to 15 hints. On some of these levels, your hints will run out really quickly, especially when you are building something which has been broken into a lot of small pieces. Try to get as far as you can without using the hints on each level, because you may need them.
