Instructions
Use medium-weight drivers. Take advantage of their relative steadiness and their speed potential. The two princesses, Daisy and Peach, as well as the Mario brothers, are the best options.
Ride a bike. Apart from being slightly faster than karts, you can perform wheelies on them, which will give you a slight, but invaluable, speed boost.
Learn the track like the back of your hand. You must know all the secret passages of your racing level and knowledge of every little detail of the main circuit. Practice constantly on one particular track at a time until you have become a true expert.
Start the race with a rocket boost. To achieve the perfect start, press "A" as soon as the number 2 at the screen starts fading, right after you have heard the sound of the countdown's second beep. It requires perfect precision and it's so important that, if you fail to achieve it, it's better to start the race over again.
Drift whenever possible. Manual drifting gives you a small, but absolutely unmissable, speed boost that can make the difference between you and the elite ghost. Never pass a turn without drifting and gaining a boost momentarily.
Do "snake drifting." Nintendo decided to abolish the small jump action responsible for the excessive use of this technique in previous versions, but it is still possible to pull it off. Zigzag on wide straight roads, drifting to gain mini-boosts. It is much more difficult to achieve it on Wii, so try it only when you are desperate to catch up with the ghost.
