How to Install 2.2U on a Nintendo Wii

As of January 2011, the Wii system menu is version 4.3. The system menu needs to be updated for normal Wiis to be able to access the Shop Channel and play certain games. If you are looking into hacking your Wii to be able to play homebrew games or run homebrew applications, you will want to use an earlier release of the system menu. Version 2.2U is an old system menu version for the U.S. that is easy to install on your Wii as long as you have an SD card and some specific files.

Instructions

  1. Download the Software

    • 1

Format your SD card to FAT32 if it's a new card. When you put in a new SD card it should give you formatting options. If not, select "Computer," and right-click your SD card choosing the "Format" option. Select FAT for file system and 32 for allocation unit size.

If your Wii is already soft modded, your SD card should already be properly formatted and have files on it already.

    • 2

Download the firmware downgrade program (see Resources).

    • 3

Extract the downloaded file to the apps folder of your SD card. You can extract it using WinRAR. If your SD card doesn't have an apps folder, create one before extracting the file.

    Running the Downgrader

    • 4

Insert the SD card into the Wii. Turn on the Wii.

    • 5

Navigate to the "Homebrew Channel." Navigate using the "+" and "-" buttons on the Wiimote until you see an entry titled "Custom IOS Downgrader." Select this entry.

    • 6

Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. You will be able to choose any of the older menu versions, including 2.2U.

    • 7

      Restart the Wii.
