Make your way through the Gateway Galaxy as you learn how to control Mario and his unique abilities, including the spin ability to defeat enemies. Be sure to get the star bits while you travel through the galaxies because you will need them to access certain new galaxies to get other stars.
Free the great star once you reach the end of the level, which will send you to the Comet Observatory. This is where you will access new domes, which open the pathway to new galaxies.
Make your way to each of the domes where you get access to new galaxies. Unlock new galaxies as you obtain stars. There are eight domes with varying numbers of galaxies from three to seven.
Complete each regular galaxy. The challenges will vary from reaching the end to completing new unique tasks, such as turning all squares to a specific color.
Speak to the hungry lumas that appear both throughout the levels and occasionally in levels. They will ask you to feed them a set number of star bits. Once you have, they transform either into a new galaxy or a new planet. Completing each of these will also grant you a star.
Re-enter the domes after completing galaxies to wait for the Speedy Comet to arrive on one of the galaxies. The comet does not hit all galaxies, but when it appears the game will take you to complete a portion of the level you have already done, but this time you're racing against the clock to finish before the comet hits. If you're successful, you will be granted a star at the end of the level.
Beat the final boss to unlock access to the purple coin challenges. They are in each dome as a purple comet star. You must get the 100 coins spread throughout the level to get the star at the end. All coins in all purple coin levels are out in the open, so you do not need to search hard for them but take your time to ensure you don't miss a single one or you will have to repeat the level.
Read the letters from Luigi when they arrive. You will see a toad with a letter symbol above his head occasionally when you're visiting the observatory. You will be transported to one of the levels from the dome you have completed. Enter the level and reach the end to rescue Luigi. He will give you a star as a thank-you gesture.
