How to Complete a Wii Disc Backup

Although Nintendo Wii discs are more durable than standard audio or computer CDs or DVDs, they are still prone to damages from scratches or exposure to direct sunlight. Therefore, it only makes sense to make backup copies of the game discs and store the originals to protect them from damage or loss. Unfortunately, simply creating a copy using your favorite burner application usually results in a disc that is unplayable on the Nintendo Wii. A free software utility, though, allows you to "patch" Wii disc images before you burn them. As a result, the burned Wii discs are as playable as the originals. If you damage or lose a backup disc, the cost to create a new copy is minimal when compared to the cost of replacing an original Nintendo Wii game disc.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a free CD/DVD authoring or burning program. EASEUS, Express Burn or ImgBurn are applications that allow you to make backups of original Wii game discs (See Resources).

    • 2

Open the CD/DVD burning program on your computer. Click the "Copy Disc," "Burn Copy" or "Disc Copy" button or menu bar option. Open the disc tray of your DVD burner drive. Insert the original Wii disc when prompted to insert the disc to copy, and then close the tray. Wait for the CD/DVD burning program to copy all the data from the Wii disc to a temporary folder, and then eject the disc tray.

    • 3

Place a blank DVD into the disc tray when prompted. Click the "Burn," "Burn It" or "Write" button to copy the Wii game disc data from the temporary folder to the blank disc. Wait for the CD/DVD burning program to burn the new disc, and then eject the tray from the DVD burner drive.

    • 4

Turn on the Wii gaming console and insert the backup disc. The Wii console loads and uses the burned game disc just as it would the original.

    • 5

Put the original Wii game disc back into its protective jewel case. Store the original disc in a safe spot to avoid damage or loss. Use the original disc only to make additional copies as needed.
