How to Remove the Nintendo Wii Wrist Strap

The Wii Remote controller for the Nintendo Wii console has a wrist strap for safety. Because game actions on the Wii often require making rapid motions with the controller, Nintendo included the straps to prevent remotes from flying across the room should players lose their grip. Nintendo found the first batch of straps included with early consoles did not properly stay attached and released replacement straps. Attaching these requires first removing the old wrist strap.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the silicone Wii Remote jacket by first pulling the bottom end of the remote out the back of the rubber enclosure and then sliding the rest off the top. Though the jacket does not directly get in the way of the strap tie, taking it off makes the process easier.

    • 2

Disconnect any attached peripherals such as the Nunchuk. First unhook the wrist strap tie from the peripheral's connector hook, then pull the cable connector out while holding in the release tabs on the side.

    • 3

Loosen the knot holding the wrist strap on by pulling at one string in the knot's center. If you can't get it started, try sticking a pin or the end of a paper clip through the knot and wiggling it loose.

    • 4

Pull the knotted end of the loop out to create a large enough space to fit the wrist strap through. Place it through this gap and pull it to detach the strap from the controller.
