How to Use a Wii in the Classroom

The Wii is a video game system developed by Nintendo. The system uses wireless controls where the control pad has motion-sensing technology to detect hand and arm movements of the user. You can also log onto the Internet to surf websites, play with friends, download new games and even play with educational software. The Wii can be used in classrooms and provide benefits in helping students understand various subject matter.

      Set up the Wii in the classroom and hook it up to a television monitor. Follow the instruction manual that comes with the Wii.

      Connect to the Internet by clicking on the "Internet" icon on the home screen. From here you will be able to download various programs for classroom use. In addition the Wii has special channels that pertain to music history, geography, Earth science and many others.

      Play the Wii Weather Channel. Students can find out the temperature and wind conditions for all areas of the world. In addition students can also manipulate a three-dimensional globe of the Earth with this channel. You can use this as a segue into an interactive lesson on geography or Earth science.

      Play the Big Brain Academy Program. This program contains various games that test a user's mathematical skills, logical thinking and pattern recognition. This is an interactive way for students to put what they learn in the classroom into a practical format. Students can also compete against each other, resulting in a fun, bond-building experience.

      Play the Wii News Channel. This channel presents up-to-date news in all subject matter including politics, world events, science and many others. This channel is a good way for students to apply classroom information or to discuss the events from the world.
