How to Make Your Own Wii AV Cable

The Nintendo Wii A/V cable does not provide much length for use between the game console and another device. You can increase the length of the A/V cable by making your own. A few electronic parts will be needed, as will a used or broken Wii AV cable--the proprietary plug being needed for your cable. A few tools common to most homes will be needed as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Wii A/V cable
  • Utility knife
  • 3 12-gauge electric wires, 10 feet
  • Ruler
  • Wire strippers
  • Labels
  • Marker
  • Soldering iron
  • Solder
  • RCA plugs, Yellow, Red, White

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the proprietary plug off the Wii A/V cable using the blade of a utility knife. Insert the tip of the utility knife into the seam between the front and back sections of the plug on its right side. Run the tip up along the length of the plug, across the top, down the other side and back toward you across the bottom. Pull the two sections of the plug apart.

    • 2

Slit two inches in from each end of the three electric wires with the blade of the utility knife. Pull the two wires free from each other at each end. Strip a half-inch of insulation off the two wires at each end of the electric wires with the wire strippers. Write "1," "2," "3" on three labels with the marker. Wrap a label around each of the wires at their middle.

    • 3

Heat up the soldering iron for four minutes. Place the section of the plug that has the contact pins on one end on a table. Rotate the plugs so that the contact pins are facing down.

    • 4

Solder the exposed end of the "+" labeled wire at one end of the electric wire labeled "1" to the leftmost contact on the plug. Solder the other exposed wire at the same end to the contact next to the one just soldered. Let the solder cool for a minute before continuing.

    • 5

Solder the exposed end of the "+" labeled wire at one end of the electric wire labeled "2" to the third contact from the left on the plug. Solder the other exposed wire at the same end to the contact next to the one just soldered. Repeat this procedure with the wire labeled "3," only soldering the "+" labeled wire to the fifth contact from the left and the other exposed wire at the same end to the contact next to the fifth contact. Let the solder cool for a minute before continuing.

    • 6

Solder the exposed end of the "+" labeled wire at the other end of the wire labeled "1" to the metal lug the bottom of the yellow RCA plug. Solder the other wire at the same end to the side of the plug. Let the solder cool for a minute.

    • 7

Solder the exposed end of the "+" labeled wire at the other end of the wire labeled "2" to the metal lug the bottom of the red RCA plug. Solder the other wire at the same end to the side of the plug. Repeat this procedure with the white RCA plug and the wire labeled "3." Let the solder cool for a minute.

    • 8

Wrap strips of electrical tape around the bottom of each of the RCA plugs. Snap the two sections of the Wii A/V plug together. Unplug the soldering iron.
