How to Install a Wiikey 2 Mod Chip

Like many game consoles, the Wii has been inhibited from performing certain actions by the operating system; for example, you can not play a copy made of a legally owned Wii game disc. Installing the Wiikey 2 mod ("modification") chip adds new commands to the operating system so that actions such as playing copies can be done. The procedure requires a partial disassembly of the Wii and a few tools found in most households. No electronic skills are needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Wiikey 2 mod chip
  • Phillips jeweler's screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Torx screwdriver
  • Tweezers
  • Soldering iron

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord and the audio/video plug from the Wii. Place the Wii face down on a work surface. Remove the screws from the four corners with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Stand the Wii on its side so that the battery compartment is facing up. Remove the screw from the battery compartment lid with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Remove the locking tab with the jaws of a needle-nosed pliers. Remove the lid.

    • 2

Turn the Wii on its side so that the compartment doors are facing up. Pull off both of the doors from the Wii by wiggling them out of the grooves they are in. Remove the screws from inside the compartment with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Remove the black compartment insert from the WIi.

    • 3

Turn the Wii on its side so that the front panel is facing up. Remove the screws surrounding the front panel with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the front panel off. Remove the cable connected to the circuit board with tweezers. Place the front panel aside.

    • 4

Place the Wii so that the top is facing up. Pull the top off the Wii with your fingers. Remove the screws from the metal plate that is beneath the top with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the plate off.

    • 5

Remove the screws from the perforated plate that is beneath the metal plate using the Torx screwdriver. Pull the perforated plate off the Wii. Disconnect the cable from the bottom of the perforated plate with the tweezers. Place the perforated plate aside.

    • 6

Rotate the Wii so that the exposed sticker that says "B52850" is facing you at the right front. Locate the black computer chip to the right of the metal plate at the center of the Wii; the chip will be the same size as the Wiikey 2 chip and there will be a silver screw on the circuit board at its upper right corner.

    • 7

Remove the Wiikey 2 chip from its protective bag. Orient the Wiikey 2 chip so that the notch on its corner lines up with the notch on the computer chip. Press down on the Wiikey 2 chip to seat it on the computer chip.

    • 8

Heat up the soldering iron for five minutes. Touch the soldering iron's tip to the following contacts on the circuit board for no more than five seconds each: the fourth from the bottom contact closest to the right of the vertical connector above the chip, the leftmost contact above the left corner of the chip and the contact directly to the right of the leftmost contact. Let the contacts cool for two minutes before proceeding.

    • 9

Touch the soldering iron's tip to the following contacts on the left side of the chip for no more than five seconds each: the 10th from the bottom contact, the contact six contacts up and the one directly above it. Let the contacts cool for two minutes before proceeding. Unplug the soldering iron.

    • 10

Reverse the disassembly process to put the Wii back together. Reattach the audio/video plug and the power cord.
