Nintendo Wii System Unable to Read Disc

The Nintendo Wii features more than a thousand titles for both casual and hard-core gamers. This console, which was released in 2006, plays discs manufactured for use in the Wii and the GameCube -- Nintendo's previous home video game console. The Wii does not, however, play CDs or DVDs as the consoles from rivals Sony and Microsoft do. If your Wii is not reading a disc, you can try to troubleshoot the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the disc into the console properly. If the Wii is positioned vertically you should face the label to the right. If you lay the Wii flat, make sure the label is facing up when you insert it.

    • 2

Check the disc for residue. If you spot something on the disc that could interfere with its operation or potentially get inside the console, you need to clean it. Use a dry cloth and wipe the bottom of the disc from the inside out. Do not rub it in a circular motion. This could scratch the disc.

Read the label. Wii consoles in North America will play game discs made for use in North America only. On the bottom of the label you should see a note that the disc is manufactured for Wii consoles in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Latin America.

Turn the power of the Wii off. Disconnect the AC adapter from the wall outlet and wait a couple of minutes. Plug the adapter back in and turn the console back on. Insert the disc again and see if it works.
