How to Change Gears in Mario Kart Wii

"Mario Kart Wii" provides two options for drift style -- automatic or manual -- for every cart in the game. Though many racing games refer to what type of transmission the player would like to use when they give the options of manual or automatic, this is not the case in "Mario Kart Wii." This option only affects how carts will take corners on the track during the game. Automatic will allow most beginners to corner more easily but will not allow the cart to drift. Manual allows the cart to drift and can cause a speed boost.

Instructions

  1. Drifting

    • 1

Select a character. Select either a kart or a bike. Karts can receive a double boost when drifting, but bikes can receive only a single boost. Select "Cup" and "Race," and begin.

    • 2

Approach the first corner on the race track. Hold "B" and turn into the corner. Slide around the corner and rock the Wii remote up and down until blue sparks appear behind the rear wheels of the kart. Release "B." The kart will burst forward temporarily.

    • 3

Attempt to drift around subsequent corners.

    Double Boost

    • 4

Select a character. Select kart. Do not select a bike. Bikes cannot double-drift. Select "Cup," "Track" and begin a race.

    • 5

Approach the first corner and begin to drift as shown in Section 1. Continue to hold "B" and rock the Wii remote up and down until the blue sparks change to orange sparks.

    • 6

Release "B" and the kart will receive a temporary boost, which will last longer than a single boost. Practice double and single drifting as they are essential techniques to driving manually.
