The Wii Remote Controls Are Not Working

So you just purchased another Wii remote so you could play the New Super Mario with a partner, but your new controller doesn't work? You can check a few simple things before rushing the controller off to the repair man or shelling out money for a new one. Many times what seems to be a serious problem is just a dead battery, an unplugged cord or a remote that needs to be synced.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the battery cover on the back of the remote. Ensure that the batteries are inserted correctly and have a charge. If the current batteries are inserted correctly, try another set of batteries, or another battery pack to see if this corrects the problem.

    • 2

Check the sensor bar connection in the back of the Wii. Ensure that the plug is properly inserted into the red connector. If the sensor bar is not plugged in, the Wii won't detect the movement of your remotes, causing the remotes to appear non-functional.

    • 3

Remove the battery pack of your remote. Notice the small red button on the right-hand side of the remote labeled "SYNC." Turn on your Wii. Press the "SYNC" button inside your controller. Open the SD card slot on the front of your Wii. Press the red "SYNC" button located above the SD card slots. This syncs your remote to your Wii. Your Wii won't detect remotes that have not been synced and the remotes will appear non-functional.
