How to Hook Up a Hard Drive to Your Nintendo Wii

Nintendo Wii has the ability to run homebrew software and emulators. The Wii can run Wii games off of a USB drive or external hard drive using a USB loader program. The Homebrew Channel with a custom IOS is a prerequisite before installing USB Loader GX to your Wii to enable the successful operation of a hard drive to run your Wii games and homebrew software.

Plug your external hard drive into your computer. Navigate to the Code Plex website (see Resources) and click on "Download" to save WBFS Manager to your computer. Install the WBFS software by double-clicking on the program setup file and clicking "Next" when prompted. Choose a directory to install the software to.

    • 2

Open WBFS Manager and click on "Format" to format and prepare the external hard drive partition. Exit WBFS Manager and unplug your external hard drive.

    • 3

Plug your external hard drive into your Nintendo Wii. The port designated for external devices such as an external hard drive is the port closest to the edge of the Nintendo Wii. The second port is for game controllers.

    • 4

Search for your preferred USB loader program for Wii games, such as USB Loader GX using your favorite search engine. The remaining instructions will be based upon USB Loader GX, as it is most compatible and user-friendly.

    • 5

Navigate to the USB Loader GX downloads page. Download your preferred revision of USB Loader GX by clicking on the corresponding link. This includes the most recent dol file. The dol file is the Wii executable. You will also need the most recent WAD channel for USB Loader if you would like the USB Loader GX on the Wii main menu as a channel.

    • 6

Place the USB Loader GX dol file into the Apps folder on your SD card. Place the USB Loader GX WAD file if applicable into the WAD folder on your SD card and install through a WAD manager in the Homebrew Channel.

    • 7

Open USB Loader GX through the Homebrew Channel and add games by pressing the "+" button to install them to the external hard drive. Depending on the type, the games might take anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour to copy.
