How to Identify a D2C Drive

D2C drives are self-loading DVD drives that are used in the Nintendo Wii. They can read Nintendo Wii game DVDs (both single and dual layered) and Game Cube mini-discs. The Wii is manufactured so that the D2C drive can be replaced if needed. It is held in by a plate with four screws and has two ribbons plugged into it. Mod chips can also be added to the D2C drive to increase its capabilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all of the screws on the outside of the Wii using either the Phillips screwdriver or the tri-wing screwdriver. Make sure you check under the stickers on the bottom of the Wii, the rubber footings on the bottom and sides of the Wii and underneath the faceplates. There are screws hidden under all of these locations.

    • 2

Remove the faceplate from the front of the Wii, unplugging any wires that might be plugged into it.

    • 3

Remove the cover from the right side of the Wii. Make sure all the screws are removed before applying force to remove it.

    • 4

Remove the four screws from the silver plate holding in the DVD player. The screws are located at the four corners of the plate.

    • 5

Lift up the DVD player and look on the underside for two black microchips that are next to each other, one is smaller and one is large.

    • 6

Look at the numbers on the smaller microchip. They should be in the format XXX-XXX. The three characters after the hyphen identify whether it is a D2C drive or something different.
