Wii GPU Specifications

The Wii console is Nintendo's follow-up to the GameCube system. It offers consumers innovations in both price and interactivity. These consoles can be purchased new at prices ranging from about $200 to $300 as of 2010. The Wii also puts the player into the game with its motion-sensor technology. Powering what the user sees on the screen is the ATI "Hollywood" graphics processing unit (GPU).
  1. GPU Specifications

    • The integrated ATI Hollywood GPU in the Nintendo Wii console operates at 243 MHz. This GPU uses 24 MB of RAM from the console's total of 88 MB.

    Comparison

    • A comparison with the GPUs of other consoles provides a better understanding of the capabilities of the ATI Hollywood GPU. The GameCube's GPU operates at 162 Mhz, a full 81 MHz slower than the Wii. The GPU of Microsoft's original Xbox console operates at 233 MHz, still 10 MHz slower than the Wii. Put another way, the Wii's Hollywood GPU offers more powerful performance than previous-generation consoles at a lower price than current-generation consoles.

    Output

    • The ATI Hollywood GPU provides users with several different output types depending on the television in question. It offers outputs of 480i (NTSC), 576i (PAL/SECAM), as well as 480p progressive scan (EDTV).
