How to Install Homebrew Channel Without Chip

One feature of major seventh-generation video games consoles is something called homebrew games. Homebrew games are the console equivalent to the free indie games normally found in the computer world. Because they do not include commercial properties, homebrew games are legal to distribute and play. You can install a homebrew channel to your Nintendo Wii without a chip, provided you have an SD card -- a small, flat storage device.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your SD card to your computer. If your computer does not have a clearly labeled SD slot, you will need a USB adapter. Slide the SD card into the thin slot of the USB adapter and connect the USB adapter into your computer.

    • 2

Click "View Files" to open a window with the contents of your SD card displayed. If your SD card is empty, the window will be empty as well.

    • 3

Open whatever folder contains your homebrew channel.

    • 4

Left-click the homebrew channel and drag the file into the SD card window. Wait a moment for it to finish copying.

    • 5

Take the SD card out of your computer and insert it into your Wii. The SD card slot is behind a small door in the front face of your Wii. Inserting the card automatically makes its contents accessible for usage.

    • 6

Turn on your Wii and press "A" to load the main menu. Point your Wii remote towards the little "SD" icon on the lower left-hand corner to show channels stored on the SD card.

    • 7

Point your Wii remote towards the homebrew channel you added. Press "A" to load its title screen. Point towards the "Start" button on the title screen and press "A" to load the channel.
