Problems With Wii Controllers

The Nintendo Wii features a Wii remote, which players use to control the action on screen with hand motions, and the nunchuk accessory. This device connects to the Wii remote and includes a joystick for more control of on-screen characters. If you have problems with your Wii controllers, you can try some troubleshooting steps.
  1. Sticky Buttons

    • If the buttons on either the Wii remote or nunchuk stick, try cleaning them. Nintendo recommends dipping a new toothbrush in hot water. Shake off excess water, and lightly scrub the buttons around the sides and into cracks. Let the controller dry for at least two hours before testing.

    Controller Doesn't Turn On

    • If the LED player light does not come on when you press the power button on the Wii remote, open the battery compartment to check the batteries. Each Wii remote requires two AA batteries. Make sure they are charged and positioned correctly in the battery compartment. If the controller still will not turn on, you may need to contact Nintendo customer support.

    No Cursor on Screen

    • If you turn on the Wii remote and do not see a cursor (hand) on screen when you point the remote at your television, you may need to resynchronize the remote. Remove the battery cover, and press the red button inside the cover. Open the SD card slot on the Wii console, and press the red sync button in here. The player LED lights on the Wii remote should blink and then stop, settling on a player number that indicates the controller's position.

    Wii Remote Works Erratically

    • Make sure that you properly connected the sensor bar to the Wii and placed it on top of the television. Place the bar as near as possible to the front of the television so that the television does not obscure the line of sight between the Wii remote and sensor bar.
