How to Make a Wii Work Without An RF Switch

You can connect a Nintendo Wii to your television in three ways: with an RF switch for earlier Nintendo consoles such as the Super NES or GameCube, with a three-cord RCA adapter, or with a five-cord component video adapter. If your Wii only came with an RF switch (through a second-hand or package deal), it's worth upgrading to one of the other connection options, as these will provide a higher-quality signal without interfering with your television's saved channels like an RF switch does.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect an RCA or component video lead for Nintendo Wii to the "AV Out" port at the back of the console.

    • 2

Connect the video and audio plugs for your lead to the color-coded plugs in the back of your television. The white and red stereo plugs can also connect to the "Aux In" ports of a stereo system for an improved audio signal.

    • 3

Turn on the Nintendo Wii and tune your television to the "AV In" or "Video In" channel. Select the round "Wii" icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen by pointing your Wii remote controller at the icon and pressing "A."

    • 4

Select "Wii Settings" then "Screen." Choose "Widescreen Settings" and select "4:3 Standard" if using an RCA cable, or "16:9 Widescreen" if using a component video cable on a widescreen HDTV.

Point your remote at the "Confirm" button and press "A" to complete setup.
