Wii Storage Options

The Nintendo Wii allows you to download and play retro and new game titles from the "Virtual Console" and "Wii Ware" sections of the "Wii Shop Channel." You can choose to save these games onto your Wii's internal memory or onto an SD card. Modified Wiis also have the option of using an external USB hard drive to play homebrew applications and backup game files.
  1. Internal Memory

    • The Wii comes equipped with 512 megabytes of internal memory. This memory is in the form of "blocks" on the Wii console. Each block represents roughly 128 kilobytes of space, and each game or application you download takes up a certain number of these blocks. After a download is complete, you are notified of the number of blocks left in the system's internal memory.

    SD Cards

    • The Wii supports SD cards and SDHC cards up to 32 gigabytes in size. You can also use mini SD cards and micro SD cards if they are inserted into the proper adapters. To use these cards, simply insert them into the SD slot on the Wii console. The Wii will automatically convert the SD card's memory into its equivalent block amount on the Wii console.

    USB Storage Devices

    • An unmodified Wii does not support USB storage devices. However, owners of modified Wiis can use USB devices and the "Homebrew Channel" to play backups of their games, listen to music and watch movies. The USB device does not convert into "blocks" when used with a modified Wii.
