How to Troubleshoot a Wii Not Reading the Disc

The Nintendo Wii gaming system is designed to play discs manufactured for the Wii and the Nintendo GameCube. If you have problems with the operation of the discs in the Wii console, take troubleshooting steps to help solve the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Access the Disc Channel on the Wii Menu. This channel is in the upper left-hand corner of the menu's first screen. The title of the game will appear here if the disc is working properly. You must open this channel to play a game disc since it will not start automatically.

    • 2

Make sure you are using a disc that is supported by the console. The Nintendo Wii will not play CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray movies, or discs from competing consoles such as the Microsoft Xbox 360 or Sony PlayStation 3. The Wii also will not play Wii discs made for other regions. Check the bottom of the label to make sure the Wii disc you have is made for the Wii's region, such as North America.

    • 3

Clean the disc if it appears dirty. Wipe the disc with a soft cloth, taking care to wipe from the inside and out. Using a circular motion is more likely to cause scratching of the disc.

    • 4

Turn the power of the Wii console off with the disc out of the console. Flip the power back on and re-insert the disc. Try to play it again.
