How to Open a Wii for Cleaning

The "Wii" has fewer technical problems than the XBox, but you may still occasionally need to open the console up for cleaning. While you should send a console back to Nintendo for repairs if it is still under warranty, you can still follow a few simple steps and check out the inside of the machine.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

Unplug the machine and make sure all cords are removed from the console. Turn it upside down and remove the small silver screw with a screwdriver. Remove the battery tray from the console. Disconnect the rubber foot directly above the battery tray and remove the three white stickers from the bottom of the Wii to uncover the hidden screws.

    • 2

Remove the two Triwing screws and the three Phillips screws from the bottom of the console. Turn the Wii onto its right side. Remove the two rectangular stickers near the faceplate and the two rear rubber feet. Unscrew the four Triwing screws that you have just uncovered.

    • 3

Turn the Wii upright and remove the two socket covers. Unscrew the three Phillips-head screws from the back plate. Note the location of the long black screw for reassembly.

    • 4

Pull the faceplate off the front of the Wii. Disconnect the red and black wire plug from the Wii to totally disconnect the faceplate. Remove the black plate from the memory and controller socket area. Unscrew the two Triwing and two Phillips-head screws from the memory and controller socket area.

Lay the Wii on its left side, with the Nintendo logo facing you, and gently remove the right side of the console. Double-check for any screws that might have been missed if there is serious resistance.
