Help Connecting a Wii

Nintendo's design for the Wii is focused on simplicity and user-friendliness, and for the most part that extends to the system's setup. If you know how to connect the included cables and adjust a few basic settings in the system software, you can have the Wii up and running in a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Nintendo Wii with all necessary cables
  • Wii remote controller
  • Television with composite or component video input and stereo audio input

Choose whether you want to display the Wii vertically or horizontally. To display the Wii vertically, place the console stand so that the high end of the slanted base faces the room, and the low end faces the wall. Lower the Wii straight down into the base so that the flaps which cover the GameCube controller ports and memory card slots are facing up. To display the Wii horizontally, lay it flat with the disc slot at the top and the power, eject and reset buttons at the bottom. If you plan to use the GameCube controller and memory card ports, remove the flaps which cover them, as they cannot be fully opened while the Wii is in its horizontal configuration. (The flaps can be replaced if you decide to change the Wii to its vertical configuration.)

Connect the Wii AV multi-out cable to the port on the back of the Wii labeled AV multi out. Connect the yellow video output jack to your television's video input, and the red and white stereo audio jacks to the television's right and left stereo audio inputs respectively. (The inputs are color coded on most televisions.) If you have the optional component video cable, connect the red, green and blue video output jacks to the corresponding inputs on the television. Connect the red and white audio output jacks as described above.

Place the Wii sensor bar either on top of or in front of your television. In either case, the sensor bar should be completely horizontal (not tilted up or down) and even with the front edge of the surface upon which you placed it. It should also be centered with respect to the television. The Wii's wireless controllers communicate with the console via the sensor bar, so it is important that it be placed correctly. When you are satisfied with the placement of the sensor bar, plug it into the proper port on the back of the Wii.

Connect the Wii's AC adapter to its port on the back of the Wii, then plug the other end into a wall outlet or power strip. Turn on the power for your television and the Wii. Make sure the television is set to display from the input to which you connected the Wii. If you connected everything correctly, you will see the Wii menu. If you do not see the Wii menu, first check to make sure that your television is set to the proper input. If it is, then power off the Wii and the television, and make sure that the video cable is fully connected on both ends.

Insert two AA batteries into the Wii remote's battery slot. The Wii remote bundled with new Wiis is pre-synced, but any additional remotes must be synced manually. To sync a remote, make sure the Wii is powered on, then remove the battery cover from the Wii remote and press and hold the Sync button until the blue player LEDs on the front of the remote blink. Open the SD card slot located on the front of the Wii to reveal the second Sync button. Press and release this button. When the LEDs on the Wii remote stop blinking, synchronization is complete.

Use the Wii remote to select the options menu in the lower left corner of the Wii menu. From the options menu, choose Wii Settings, then Screen, then Widescreen Settings. If you have a standard definition television, select "Standard (4:3)." If you have a high-definition television, select "Widescreen (16:9)." Go back one screen, then select TV Resolution. For standard definition televisions, choose "Standard TV (480i)." For high-definition, choose "EDTV or HDTV (480p)." Go back to the Settings menu and choose Sound, then select "Stereo" (unless you are using a surround sound system, in which case you should choose "Surround Sound").

Complete the setup by selecting the other menu options and filling in the necessary information, which is specific to your region (such as settings for date and time and your Internet connection).
