How to Format an SD for the Wii

The Nintendo Wii differs from previous Nintendo systems in that it does not use proprietary media for storing saved game data or downloaded games. The SD cards used in Nintendo Wii are the same ones used in many electronics such as digital cameras and MP3 players. This means that any SD card formatted for use with home computers is compatible with the Wii's data storage software.

Instructions

    • 1

Try your SD card in your Wii console. Many SD cards come pre-formatted for use in appliances including the Wii. You may find formatting is not necessary, as long as you have installed all available Wii updates. Proceed to the next step if your SD card does not work initially.

    • 2

Connect your SD card to your computer via an SD card reader or port. Open "My Computer" and right-click the SD card, which may be called "No Name" or labeled with the name of the SD card's manufacturer.

    • 3

Choose "Format." Uncheck the "Quick Format" box and click "Start." Wait for the display of the "Close" button, then click it, eject and remove your card.

    • 4

Turn on your Wii. If you receive a prompt to download an update, select "Install." Wait for the menu to appear, which means the update is complete.

    • 5

Insert the SD card into the SD port beside the disc slot. Choose "SD Card" from the Wii menu to browse the card and move data to or from it.
