Power-up items are an iconic staple of the "Mario Kart" franchise. Banana peels, heat-seeking blue shells and power-up mushrooms from past Mario Kart games return in "Mario Kart Wii." Earned by driving through the multi-colored cubes, power-up items can serve as weapons or as boost items, with each providing a unique ability. However, for some gamers, these items may serve as a nuisance--an irritating characteristic about the game. Luckily, you can turn off items during gameplay, but only in "Versus" and "Battle" modes.
