How to Plug in a Wii to the Internet

The Nintendo Wii is Nintendo's newest console and successor to the Nintendo GameCube. The Wii uses unique motion controls to allow players to interact with the onscreen events without the use of a traditional controller. The Wii also has Internet connectivity, with three methods for connecting the console to the Internet. Connecting a Wii to the Internet will allow you to unlock bonus features in select games, play online matches against other players, download additional content and even stream movies and TV shows using services such as NetFlix.

Instructions

  1. Using LAN Adapter

    • 1

Connect the Wii LAN adapter to the USB port on the back of the console. This adapter allows you to connect an ethernet cable to the console.

    • 2

Connect the LAN adapter to an ethernet port on either your wireless router or your modem. The modem or router will be the medium allowing your Wii to connect to the internet. Most modems and routers have multiple ethernet inputs to allow for the connection of multiple devices.

    • 3

Turn on the Wii console and select the "Options" button in the bottom left corner of the screen, then select "Settings" followed finally by "Internet" from the options list.

    • 4

Select "Connection Status" followed by "Connection 3," then finally select "Wired Connection."

    • 5

Select "Ok" when prompted; this will initiate a connection test. Once it passes, the Wii will be connected to the Internet.

    Connecting Via a PC

    • 6

Install and run the software on the Wii's Wi-Fi USB connector CD by inserting the disc and following the on-screen options.

    • 7

Connect the Wii to the PC using a USB cable; connect one end to the Wii's USB port and the other end to a USB port on your PC.

    • 8

Turn on the Wii console and select the "Options" button in the bottom left corner of the screen, then select "Settings" followed finally by "Internet" from the options list.

    • 9

Select "Connection Status" followed by "Connection 3," then finally select "Nintendo Wi-FI USB Connector" and then click "Next."

    • 10

Check your PC; you should see a Registration Tool Window. Click on your Wii, which should be listed, and then click "Grant Permission to Connect." Check your Wii and then click "Next" followed by "Ok" to test the connection and connect to the Internet.

    Connecting Via Wi-Fi

    • 11

Turn on your Wii and press "A" on one of the controllers to reach the options menu, then select the "Options" menu on the bottom left corner of the screen, followed by "Settings" then "Internet."
