"International Karate"
"International Karate," released on the Wii in 2009, is actually a re-release of an old Commodore 64 game from 1986. The graphics are a bit weak compared to the advanced graphics of more recent Wii titles. However, it is still an accurate simulation of real karate-based action and fighting. Players fight in a one-on-one tournament setting. Players can punch, kick, jump, perform leg sweeps and do many other karate moves to attack their opponent as well as block and defend. However, instead of depleting your opponent's health bar or hurting anybody permanently, players actually earn points for how well they attack and defend. Players have 30 seconds to score more points than their opponent. Players must carefully consider each move as "International Karate" rewards careful thinking and strategy. The pace is much slower than many fighting games, but it rewards players who want a realistic karate game. Winning takes players to new opponents around the world.
"All Star Karate"
"All Star Karate," released by THQ in 2010, is a more up-to-date karate fighting game. In fact, the game feaures a storyline: Players save an old man from a group of fighters. The old man turns out to be a karate master who repays players by helping them get their black belt. Players can play against their friends in the Challenge Mode for quick fast-paced karate action. The action is a bit faster than in "International Karate," but it is also based on carefully planning moves. Players can use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to simulate the karate moves. Winning in Career Mode requires mastering move sequences. These sequences are fast groups of attack and defense that can defeat an opponent in no time. Players can also design their own move sequences with the move or "Kata" editor.
"The Circle: Martial Arts Fighter"
"The Circle: Martial Arts Fighter," released by Destineer in 2009, is a fighting game that focuses on the fighting style capoeira. This martial art is similar to karate in that both fighting styles are highly defensive and carefully planned. Game play is similar to that in other karate games, making "The Circle" perfect for people interested in karate but looking to expand their martial arts knowledge. Players can select from 12 different international fighters. There are 13 different places to fighting, including Brazil, Japan and America. Players can play multiple modes including Story Mode where they tackle each fighter one-on-one or try Training Mode to learn how to control the game and practice fighting moves. Versus Mode gives players a chance to fight against their friends. Three difficulty settings allows players to really challenge themselves or take it easier. Winning fights earns skill points, which can be used to increase a character's strength, speed and will power.
