How to Convert Your Nintendo Wii Into a DVD Player

While the Nintendo Wii includes a DVD drive, it has never actually played standard DVDs. Nintendo has been promising a download that would allow for DVD playback for a while, but many have gotten tired of waiting. Luckily, homebrew specialists have been hard at work trying to find and alternative solution.

Instructions

  Take a clean SD card and format it to a FAT-16 file system. This can be done by going to My Computer, right-clicking the SD card and selecting "Format." From there, you should be able to select the FAT file system. You are also able to label this SD card. Name it something like, "Twilight Hack" or "WiiDVD" so that you don't forget what is on your card.

  Download the WiiBrew program to your computer from its website.

  Run the WiiBrew installer. Everything you need will be installed on your formatted SD card. When prompted to select which packages to install, you should select Twilight Hack (USA), Homebrew Channel and DVDX.

  Pull out a copy of "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess." There will be some letters and numbers on the inner circle of the text. Take note of these numbers and select which version of Twilight Hack (either version 0 or 2) you will need when trying to execute the application. Once everything has been downloaded, remove your SD card.

  Start "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" and create a new save file. This will eventually be erased.

  Turn off the system and then inset the SD card. Start the system again and erase the save data you just created. Replace it with the Twilight Princess file that you saved on your SD card. You can do this by going to "Data Management" and copying the file from your SD card onto the Wii memory.

  Start "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess," and select the Twilight Hack from your saved games. From there the game will boot up, and there will be a character right in front of you. Go up and talk to that character, and that will initiate the hack.

  Accept a few disclaimers and finish the installation. Once this is complete, you will see the new homebrewed channel on your Wii menu.

  Select the homebrewed channel and then select the DVDX installer. Select normal installation and wait for the install to complete.

  Turn off your Wii and remove the SD card.

  Put the SD card back into your computer, go to Hackmii.com and download the "Mplayer" application to the apps folder on your SD card.

  Take the SD card back out of your computer, insert it into the Wii and bring the homebrew channel back up and select Mplayer.

  Insert a DVD and watch movies with your Wii whenever you want.
