How to Hook a Nintendo Wii Up to a Wireless Laptop

Connecting your Wii system to the Internet greatly expands the functionality of the Wii, and allows you to communicate with friends and play games with people across the world. If for some reason you cannot connect your Wii to the wireless network you use for your computer, it is possible to use a computer as a Wi-Fi hotspot from which to connect the Wii to the Internet. This is particularly useful to college students whose systems do not have the software needed to verify a user for connection to a school's network.

Things You'll Need

  • A computer with a Wi-Fi card
  • Cat5 Cable
  • Wireless router

Connect your laptop or desktop to the wireless access point you normally use. To do this manually, open the "Start" menu, then go to "Control Panel," then "Network and Sharing Center," then, "Connect to a Network." From this screen, choose your network from the list.

Connect one end of the Cat5 cable to your computer, and the other to your wireless router. Turn the power on the router on.

    • 3

Go back to the "Network and Sharing Center." Click "Manage Network Connections." Holding the "Shift" key so that you can select more than one thing at a time, highlight "Local Area Network" and your wireless Internet connection. Right click on the selection and click "Bridge Connections."

Power up your Wii and go to the "Wii Options" screen. Then, click "Wii Settings" then, "Internet" then, "Connection 1," and finally, "Wireless." Have the system search for an access point. Find your router on the list of access points the Wii brings up and select it. It will then test the connection, and should be successful.
