How to Copy Wi-Fi Wii Game Files to an SD Card

You are not limited to just playing games off discs on your Nintendo Wii. Gamers can download classic games from older consoles, as well as newly developed games, through the Wii Shop channel. However, the internal storage memory of the Wii is only 512MB, meaning that if you want to download several games, you will need an SD card. With an SD card in the console, you can transfer game files for storage and, with an update to the Wii Firmware, access the games directly from the card.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the rectangular flap on the front of the Wii console just beneath the disc tray. Insert an SD card into the slot under the flap. Power on the Wii.

    • 2

Highlight the icon in the bottom left corner of the Wii Menu that says "Wii." Press "A" on your Wiimote.

    • 3

Highlight "Wii Settings" and press "A."

    • 4

Scroll to "Wii System Update" and press "A." Confirm the update and press "A." The Wii will download the most recent firmware. You need at least Firmware 4.0 for full SD card support.

    • 5

Return to the main menu. Highlight and click the "Wii" icon.

    • 6

Highlight "Data Management" and press "A." Highlight "Channels" on the next menu and press "A."

    • 7

Locate the game file you want to copy onto the SD card. Hover over it with your Wiimote and press "A."

    • 8

Click "Yes" when prompted to copy the game to the SD card.
