How to Troubleshoot Problems With a Wii SD Memory Card

You are all set to launch "Super Metroid" off of an SD card to play on your Nintendo Wii but you find that the console will not play the game directly from the card, or worse, not detect the card at all. SD cards expand the system memory of a Nintendo Wii so you can store game saves and downloadable games and content without having to take up space on the Wii itself. SD card sizes, placement in the system and old firmware can all lead to problems reading the SD card.

Instructions

  1. SD Card Compatibility

    • 1

Check the type and memory capacity of your SD card. As of August 2010, the Nintendo Wii supports SD, miniSD and microSD cards up to 2GB in size and SDHC cards up to 32GB. You will need firmware 4.0 on the Wii to run SDHC cards.

    • 2

Slide miniSD and microSD cards into an SD card adapter. The smaller cards will not properly fit into the Wii without an adapter.

    • 3

Insert the SD card into the slot on your Wii just below the disc drive, or to the left if your console is standing vertically. The label of the SD card should face the disc drive. Press the SD card into the slot until you hear a click.

    Not Detected

    • 4

Power off your Nintendo Wii console.

    • 5

Eject the SD card from the console. Insert the card into another device such as a camera, computer or different gaming system. Verify the SD card is detected.

    • 6

Insert the SD card back into the Wii console. Power on the system.

    • 7

Highlight and press "A" on the SD card icon to access the menu.

    Update Firmware

    • 8

Check the bottom left of the main Wii Menu. If there is no SD card icon, you will need to update your Wii to at least firmware 4.0.

    • 9

Move your Wii Remote cursor to the lower left corner of the Wii Menu and highlight the circle with the word "Wii" inside. Press "A" on the Wii Remote to select the icon.

    • 10

Choose "Wii System Settings." Click the arrow on the left side of the screen twice then select "Wii System Update." The console will search for the latest firmware.

    • 11

Click "Yes" and then choose "I Agree." The Wii will connect to the Internet and download the new firmware. Upon completion you will return to the main Wii Menu.

    • 12

Select the SD card icon to view any files on the card. You can now launch games directly from the card, which was not available until the 4.0 firmware release.

    Compatible File Formats

    • 13

Insert your SD card into a computer and check the file formats of any non-game related media you wish to access on the Wii.

    • 14

Verify that the media is a JPEG file for images, QuickTime or AVI file for movies, and MP3 or AAC file for audio. Other formats will not work on the Wii console.

    • 15

Remove any file types that are not compatible with the Wii console or convert them to the proper format.
