How to Troubleshoot a Wii LAN Adapter

Connecting to the Internet through your Nintendo Wii enables you to participate in multiplayer online games, browse websites and purchase video games digitally. The Wii lacks an Ethernet port and relies on connecting to a nearby wireless router to gain Internet access. Nintendo makes a LAN adapter that allows you to connect to a wired router or directly to a broadband Internet modem. If you're having trouble making a connection, try some basic troubleshooting.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the LAN adapter is connected to the USB port on the Wii and that the Ethernet cable is connected to the Ethernet port on the LAN adapter.

    • 2

Make sure the Ethernet cable is connected to an "Ethernet out" or "To computer" labeled port on the router. If you are not using a router, verify that the cable is connected directly to the "Ethernet out" port on the back of the cable or DSL modem.

    • 3

Check to see if the connection is active. If the lights on the modem and/or router are not lit up or only one or two lights are on, the connection may not be working. Unplug the power supply of both the modem and router for a few minutes.

    • 4

Reconnect the power supply of the cable or DSL modem and wait for the status lights to begin blinking. Reconnect the power supply of the router if you are using one and wait for the the lights to begin blinking.

    • 5

Turn on the Wii and navigate to the "Wii Settings" link on the "home screen." Select "Internet" followed by "Connection Settings." Select "Connection 1" from the available connections. Select "Wired Connection." Wait for the Wii to detect and connect to the router.
