How to Upgrade to a Bigger SD Card for Wii

With the ever larger amount of memory consumed by Virtual Console games, channels, and game saves on the Nintendo Wii, upgrading to a larger SanDisk (SD) card is a bridge that most gamers will have to cross. The biggest issue in switching to a bigger SD card is that there is only one SD card slot on the Wii. Depending on how much data you are attempting to transfer to your new card, the process may be a bit time consuming.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the small door on the front of your Nintendo Wii, and insert the larger SD card into the slot.

    • 2

Turn on the Wii, and click on the "Wii" logo on the lower left.

    • 3

Select "Data Management," then choose "Channels." Click on a game icon to reveal how many memory blocks it uses, and write down the games that use the most memory.

    • 4

Click on the game channels that use the most memory, then select "Move" to move them onto the bigger SD card. Move as many game channels onto the SD card as possible in order to accommodate the upgrade.

    • 5

Wait for all of the game channels to finish downloading to the card, then press on the SD card to eject it from the Wii.

    • 6

Insert your old SD card into the slot. Wait for the channels to load, then move as many of them onto the Wii as possible. Eject the old SD card once you have run out of open memory blocks on the Wii.

    • 7

Reinsert the bigger memory card into the slot, and wait for the channels to load. Repeat Steps 4, 5, and 6 until you have successfully moved all games from your old SD card to the bigger one.
