How to Open a Wii Console

Wii users sometimes want to install mod chips, which allow modification to the console, replace their casing or carry out minor repairs. To do any of these things, you have to open up the console. Nintendo advises that only experienced technicians try this, and their tri-wing screws deter amateurs from attempting to disassemble the Wii. But doing it yourself can save some time and money.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Wii. Unplug all cables.

    • 2

Set the console on a working surface with the access panel facing up.

    • 3

Snap off the two plastic panels. This will reveal ports and a black panel.

    • 4

Unscrew the screws that hold down the black panel using the Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 5

Pry off the panel with your knife. Beneath this lies a white panel.

    • 6

Unscrew the four screws holding down the white panel.

    • 7

      Flip over the console.

    • 8

Unscrew the screw closing the battery compartment.

    • 9

Remove the memory battery. This will reset your date and time but won't affect your other stored data.

    • 10

Remove another screw from within the battery compartment using the tri-wing screwdriver.

    • 11

Using your knife, remove three white square stickers, revealing additional screws.

    • 12

Remove the screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 13

Set the console down flat so the rubber covers face up.

    • 14

Pry off the rubber covers with your knife. This will reveal four screws.

    • 15

Remove the screws with your tri-wing screwdriver.

    • 16

Pry off the front of the console. A wire will still connect the front panel to the circuit board.

    • 17

Unplug the wire from the circuit board.

    • 18

Hold down the bottom of the console and remove the cover.

    • 19

Pull off the metal shield. This will expose the metal disc drive, which four screws secure.

    • 20

Remove the screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 21

      Swing the disc drive upward.

    • 22
